Stained Steel The iron and steel sector is regarded as the core of Indian economy. Its players are big and powerful. It is extremely resource-intensive and polluting. On top of this, it is expanding at a phenomenal rate. This makes the sector a fit case for environmental scrutiny. Delhi non-profit Centre for Science and Environment studied the sector for two years to prepare its environmental profile and rate the performance of its top companies. The exercise undertaken by its Green Rating Project sprang a surprise: the steel sector is struggling to meet even the minimum statutory pollution norms. State pollution control boards do not have the capacity to monitor and regulate these behemoths. What’s worse, the sector is non-transparent and shy of public scrutiny—more than any other sector rated by the project in the past. Indian Sponge Iron Industry- A big business at cost of ENVIRONMENT

Sponge iron manufacturing sector will dominate Indian steel sector very soon. India is already the largest sponge iron producer in the world. Government does not have correct estimate of number of sponge iron industries working in our country. Surprise! Small scale manufacturers are many and government's control on them is a big question. If correct number of operating sponge iron making plants are not known, one can easily figure the status of regulatory control. Pollution from these factories are all time high. Regulatory norms are inadequate. Monitoring and control is sub-standard. It is not enough being the largest sponge iron producer in the world, we should also see how polluting it is. Government need to seriously assess the way the industry is operating and push it to make sustainable. The cost we are ultimately paying is enormous and unacceptable.

More than 70 per cent of India's electricity is produced by coal-fired power plants. Most of them do not have modern technologies and use low-grade coal that is low on energy content and high on waste. As a result, the coal power sector is one of the most polluting and resource wasteful. These are the findings of a two-year study by non-profit Centre for Science and Environment that rated the plants on environment and energy performance. The best performing plant could get only an average Three Leaves Award by scoring about 50 per cent marks, while awhopping 40 per cent of the sample scored less than 20 per cent. Since coal is crucial to meet the energy needs of the country, its use will grow. This will intensify pollution and resource conflicts unless the industry shapes up and regulators improve pollution standards and scrutiny. Real-time Monitoring – A Step Ahead
